Myanmar elected the first non-military president
A real breakthrough in the history of Myanmar: the parliament has elected a civilian for the Presidential title. This is the first time their President is not a commander of a military grouping.
Htin Kyaw received about 55% of all the votes at the Parliament. The elections happened behind the closed door. The journalists were not allowed to take reports of the event. However, after the elections they photographed a big smile of Suu Kyi, who made it clear to the current President that she, in fact, will be above him, and he has to perform the Presidential duties in concert with her vision for the country. The Guardian states that Suu Kyi could not apply for the Presidential title due to regulations of army-drafted constitution of Myanmar. But being a representative of the majority in the Parliament, she has already assigned a successor to Htin Kyaw.
Two other leaders of the Parliament, Myint Swe and Henry Van Thio, will elected for the vice-presidents positions.
